Home at War
Home at War was a project done by Katie in early 2020. The project itself focuses on features and structures that still remain in Falmouth and Cornwall from the Second World War. A way to try and highlight the historical importance of the ground that locals walk on and how many features are readily available to see, they're just not known about.
"What I wanted to create with Home at War, was an educational project. Not something it is created just for aesthetics, but work that can connect with the locals. Allowing them to become aware of just where they live and how much importance there is in Falmouth and Cornwall.
Growing up, I visited Falmouth and Cornwall nearly every year. Going to university there was just the cherry on top. Doing a visual course, I felt that it was important to be able to connect with the local area and to bring what little knowledge I had and research together.
Throughout all of my education, history has always fascinated me. Specifically both the world war. Coming to Cornwall and putting two an two together seemed like the right idea. When beginning my research, I found that Falmouth docks actually played a key role in the second world war (And many other wars before that). I was shocked to find that nothing is ever mention of the harbour, in education when it comes to the war, the only information we ever learn of Britain was for the blitz. I wanted to be able to make the information more available to the public. Having gotten in touch with many of the locals who were alive during the time, I had even more of a reason to allow them to access these memories!
Due to timing of the project and Covid-19, I have had to put a pause on the project. Many people I was planning to meet up with are vulnerable and it wasn't worth the risk. Instead in the near future, I hope to be able to continue the project." - Katie O'Neill
